About this dataset

Overview

Analysis code, frozen prompts and aggregate results for “Decomposing Treatment Effect Estimation Reveals Asymmetric Clinical Knowledge in Large Language Models.” The study compared number-needed-to-treat estimates from large language models with 539 reference values from TheNNT.com, Cochrane systematic reviews, ClinicalTrials.gov and MIMIC-IV, and tested a decomposed strategy that asks for the baseline event rate and the relative risk separately. The release contains the estimation harness and frozen prompts, 15 analysis scripts, 26 aggregate result files and 13 figures. No file contains patient-level data.

How it was made

Methods

  1. 1

Models estimated treatment effects for intervention-condition pairs three ways: direct number needed to treat, direct absolute risk reduction, and a decomposed strategy that asks for the baseline event rate and then the relative risk. Prompts were optimized over 10 experiments on 374 training pairs, frozen, and applied to every model on 165 held-out pairs.

  2. 2

Reference values came from four tiers: TheNNT.com, Cochrane review abstracts, ClinicalTrials.gov results and propensity-matched MIMIC-IV outcomes. Continuous analyses use signed absolute risk reduction; the results cover agreement, calibration, concordance, subgroup, contamination and error-attribution analyses.

  3. 3

The release is aggregate only; MIMIC-derived figures, raw model-call records and scraped source text are not included. Any language-model processing of MIMIC-IV data used a Microsoft Azure deployment in which data are not transmitted to the model provider, as PhysioNet permits for credentialed data. The source manifest fixes all 70 files by byte count and SHA-256, and the archive adds the manifest itself. Version 1.0.1 corrects this data-handling wording in README.md and METHODS.md; code, prompts, results and figures are byte-identical to 1.0.0.
