A Message from the Editor-in-Chief
Welcome to The Journal of the American Medical Student Association (JAMSA).
This journal is a testament to what is possible when early-career physicians, researchers, and trainees are not only empowered to pursue difficult questions—but also prepared to transform them and look beyond. We believe in building a space where emerging professionals can explore complexity in all its forms, whether through clinical inquiry, policy critique, systems science, or interdisciplinary collaboration. We are here not just to publish research, but to cultivate the intellectual courage and critical thinking required to move the field forward.
Medical students, residents, and early-career professionals play a vital and often overlooked role in advancing clinical insight and scientific discovery. Their leadership is not a footnote—it is foundational. At JAMSA, we embrace scholarly rigor—not scholarly gatekeeping. Our editorial approach is defined by transparency, high standards, and a commitment to academic mentorship. We expect all submissions to reflect sound study design, interpretive clarity, and meaningful contribution—because that is what our readers and the field deserve.
We have a unique emphasis on curating knowledge that translates to health policy reform, heath equity, and systems-level change. We believe these dimensions do not dilute objectivity; they contextualize it. Structural, cultural, and political forces shape the very outcomes we measure. Therefore, acknowledging these forces sharpens the relevance of the knowledge we aim to disseminate. While our platform is grounded in objective, evidence-based inquiry, we also aim to empower early-career scholars to interrogate the structural and systemic realities that shape healthcare—and to leverage that deeper understanding to lead the future of medicine, science, and health equity.
Our journal is proudly interdisciplinary, intersectional, and global. Health is a shared human endeavor—not bound by hospital walls or national borders. We actively welcome voices from across the healthcare ecosystem and across the globe, recognizing that diverse knowledge, methodologies, and lived experiences enrich our collective understanding of health, illness, and care.
In a rapidly shifting medical landscape shaped by AI, digital health, and emerging technologies, we see an urgent need for responsible engagement. We are a forward-facing journal that embraces these tools not as trends, but as instruments that—when guided by ethics and academic integrity—can improve research, expand access, and redefine care. By leaning into these changes now, we aim to play a pivotal role in shaping how technology is used and who it serves in 21st-century medicine.
To early-career physicians, scientists, educators, and advocates: we invite you to lead with us. Contribute your insights, your questions, and your scholarship to a platform that values them deeply. Together, let’s build a collective, actionable, and transformative body of work that moves medicine toward a more equitable and visionary future.
Warmly,
Andres F. Diaz, MS
